Day 15: Day trip to Therasia Island

Deciding last minute to take the 12 o'clock ferry to a small island off the tip of Santorini called Therasia, we sprinted the 30 minute walk down to Ammoundi Port, only to then realise it came at 12:45.. We hung around and met another guy heading there named Daniel from Malaysia and ended up sticking with him the whole day.

We arrived at the port and walked up the cliff along a giant path (partly seen in the bottom left of this photo).

We wandered through the village until we stumbled across a small church. Here, we met an old Greek repairman, who invited us to have coffee. He was very sweet, explaining his life story to us: he was a seaman who worked as an engineer on tanker ships (which explained his English skills) and now owns several properties whilst doing odd jobs around the town (repairing churches, repairing boats, harvesting grapes).

He told us he believed that friendly greek hospitality was being lost in Santorini due to the big tourist industry. In this spirit, he shared with us wine his father had made 20 years before called Vinsanto, famous in Santorini. It was delicious, made purely just from grapes with no chemicals. He even gave us a bottle of it (which we later found out is worth about $500) after much refusal from our part.

Inside the church...

And outside it.

Afterward, we stopped under this archway to have lunch (literally one of the only shady spots on the island).

After lunch, we walked to the monastery.

We walked back to the port, had a quick swim then took the 5pm ferry back to Oia.

Leaving Therasia, you can see the zigzag path we walked up and down.

View of Fira on our way back to Santorini (the white snow cap looking stuff are actually houses).

Once back in Oia, Daniel showed us a secret spot to watch the sunset.
