Day 64: Olafur Eliasson

On my last day in Denmark, Kirsten (Sophie's mum) drove me to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk.

The museum was absolutely amazing.

The cafe that looks out across the Sound...

..with a view of Sweden in the distance.

A hidden pond at the museum..

As well as a secret beach..

And garden..

And finally the main reason I made the trip to the Lousiana Museum of Modern Art, to see the Olafur Eliasson exhibit (my favourite artist of all time).

One of his models of sculptures, installations and other works on a crowded table.

The main installation exhibit "Riverbed".

After viewing all of the exhibits, I took the train to Copenhagen where I said bye to Sven and Kirsten, thanked them for their amazing hospitality and took another train to the airport. I had a bit of a scare at the airport, having to buy a last minute return ticket out of the US in order to enter it on my visa but I managed to book one a few minutes before checkout closed.

Day 63

I took the train to Copenhagen again and explored some more.

I spent most of the afternoon at the shops on Strøget, Europe's longest pedestrian street (lined with shops)..

Before having this amazing salmon and dill sandwich for lunch.

And of course other juice.

Back in Hillerød at Sophie's, Sven made gammeldags for dessert, an ice cream cone with ice cream, strawberry jam, whipped cream and flødeboller.

Day 62: Køpenhavn

As Sophie had school, I took the train to a Copenhagen to do some solo exploring.

Just one of the many beautifully odd buildings on the streets of Copenhagen.

And more..

Amalienborg Castle where Princess Mary and Prince Frederik live in the winter months. I managed to walk past at the perfect time as the changing of the guards was taking place.

One of the guards on duty outside his post.

The beautiful and famous Nyhavn (New Harbour).

From Nyhavn, I took an hour long canal boat tour around the harbour.

The Copenhagen Opera House designed by Henning Larsen cost US$500 million to build.. My favourite artist (Olafur Eilasson) designed the glass chandeliers in the foyer.

Church of Our Saviour from the boat.

My lunch: a salad sandwich on Danish rugbrød bread.

After school finished, Sophie met me in Copenhagen and showed me around, starting at the delicious Joe and the Juice.

My amazing avocado and banana smoothie.

Flødeboller: Danish ball of fresh cream on a wafer and surrounded by a chocolate coat... Yum

We then took the subway to Christiania, a really interesting Byron Bay-like small hippie village. Unfortunately, one of the three rules of Christiania is that no photos are allowed.. (The other two are no running and have fun!)

We took the subway back and wandered around Torvehallerne (food market) while waiting to meet Sophie's dad, Sven.

Some of hilarious fishy faces.

Hanging out with Sven and Sophie in the afternoon sun.

Back in Hillerød, Sven and I biked back to their place via Hillerød castle for a closer look.

Pristine gardens as per usual in Denmark.

Then for dinner, Sven cooked up a traditional Danish feast, 'stegt flæst' (BBQ'd pork strips and potatoes with a creamy parsley sauce). It was delicious!

Day 61: Hillerød

After sleeping off my long bus ride, I woke up and had a traditional Danish delicacy (the Danish version of Nutella) for breakfast.

Then headed to Sophie's school where I got to experience a day in a Danish high school. A lot more relaxed and more open than schools in Sydney. I tagged along to two of Sophie's classes (natural science and English) then afterwards, she showed me around Hillerød.

The amazing Hillerød castle.

Afterwards, we drove to the nearby Frederiksburg castle where Princess Mary (the Australian girl who married a Danish prince), Prince Frederick and their children spend their summers.

The beautiful lake where they sometimes take their boat.

The path leading to their castle.

Equipped with a sculture garden..

And their beautiful, fairytale castle.

The grounds were beautiful and the great weather wasn't too bad either!

The castle from the front gate.
